Every scientist starts with a small experiment. This 3 gallon copper still is handmade in our New Hampshire shop. It's a simple unit with no thumper, so you can learn how heat, vapor, and copper work together without anything extra in the way. It also looks great on a shelf as a conversation piece.
Know what to expect
This is a very small still. It only makes a small amount per run, which is fine for learning. It comes polished, but copper oxidizes quickly, so expect it to darken over time. The photo shows how it looks after polishing. This is a limited, flash-sale item at $229, and it's covered by our lifetime warranty.
Walkthrough: your first water run
- Set the still on a stable heat source in a well-ventilated area.
- Fill the pot partway with plain water. Never fill it to the top.
- Heat it slowly. Watch where the vapor travels and where it condenses back into liquid.
- Check every joint for leaks while it's warm, and adjust if needed.
- Let it cool fully before you take anything apart.
A water run is also a good way to make distilled water, and it shows you how your still behaves before you try anything else.
Polishing and care
To bring back the shine, use a mild acid such as vinegar or citric acid, then rinse and dry well. Some owners like the darker patina and leave it alone. Either way, keep it clean and dry between uses.
